Meet the Neighborhood’s Newest Hot Spot: Unsoul Food

The last few months haven’t provided the best opportunity for new businesses to open their doors, but if you’re getting tired of Grubhub-ing the same old takeout spots in our neighborhood, you’re in luck! UnSoul Food, a vegan eatery that previously only served in pop-up locales, has spent the last year readying for its grand opening, which it celebrated this summer to wide acclaim. And it’s all just less than a mile from your The Hamilton apartment.

The shop is from a husband-and-wife team who have made a name for themselves specializing in vegan Southern and soul food, through catering events and efforts like the Philly Vegan Night Market, which they started in the fall to showcase the vegan culinary creativity in the Point Breeze area. The new brick-and-mortar location is only starting with takeout but will soon move to delivery, then outdoor dining and eventually indoor as well. UnSoul Food aims to be a community-minded restaurant and, as such, takes requests for dishes through its social media accounts, changing the menu every week to accommodate diners’ interests.

The typical menu is full of plant-based Southern cuisine: cheesesteaks, fried chicken, seafood and more—all made from handcrafted seitan. Among the most popular items are the baked macaroni and cheese, which has won awards across the city, and the agave-buttered flaxseed cornbread. The crispy dishes brimming with spices and flavor will have you feeling like you’re dining on Bourbon Street rather than right in your own The Hamilton apartment.

If you’re vegan, you know the struggle to find quality, affordable meals, so UnSoul Food will be a welcome addition to the local culinary scene. And even if you don’t have any dietary restrictions, the culinary expertise of the team at UnSoul Food makes it hard to taste any difference at all—and adds some tasty dietary benefits to your next meal out!
