Where to get Southern soul food right in Philly

Summer is the perfect time for some soul food—and here in Philly, you don’t have to travel far from your The Hamilton apartment to find it!

We could all use a little comfort food, and that’s offered in spades at SOUTH Kitchen & Jazz Bar. Though the spot is just three blocks from your The Hamilton apartment, you’ll feel instead like you’re relaxing on the Bayou. The restaurant and performance venue follow a New Orleans theme—from the menu to the décor to the live jazz music. SOUTH has been open throughout the pandemic for both takeout and delivery and, once business gets going again, spend one of your first nights out experiencing the full Southern hospitality.

When operations resume, SOUTH hosts jazz shows several nights a week in its cozy performance café, featuring some of the region’s most renowned jazz musicians. Diners can grab drinks during the show or enjoy a full SOUTH dinner while taking in the music.

You can also skip the show and focus on the food in the dining rooms. The garden courtyard is modeled after some of the famed Bourbon Street locales, while the dining hall and chef’s counter are bustling spaces to enjoy SOUTH’s culinary creativity. The menu is full of Southern staples, like fried green tomatoes, rock shrimp, mac and cheese and fried chicken. Make sure to start your meal with the fresh-baked cornbread drizzled with homemade cream cheese honey butter, and round it out with one of its signature cocktails, featuring lots of bourbons and whiskeys.

We’ve all been cooped up for months, so once things get back to normal, it’ll be the time to treat yourself to a meal out, all while supporting local businesses!
